Lincoln County, Montana, is located in the far northwest corner of Montana, and is well known for it's unsurpassed beauty, abundant wildlife, and endless recreational opportunities. Libby, the county seat, is located on Hwy 2, between Hwy 56 and Hwy 37 & is nestled in a valley carved by the Kootenai River.
Lincoln County is one of 56 counties in Montana. The estimated population in 2004 was 19,101. This was an increase of 1.40% from the 2000 census. In 2002, the per capita personal income in Lincoln County was $19,559. This was an increase of 26.3% from 1997. The main industries are lumber and wood products, mining, tourism and recreation. The movies "The River Wild" and "Always" were filmed here.
When spring arrives and the mountain snow melts away, the Kootenai National Forest playground comes alive with over 2.2 million acres of accessible public land. Mountain trails and lakes open up, beautiful wildflowers come in bloom, and wildlife have their young. Libby is the base camp for the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area, 90-mile long Lake Koocanusa, the Northwest Peaks Scenic Area, and the Ten Lakes Scenic Area.
Winter in Lincoln County Montana means lots of snow, and for those who love this wondrous white powder, the Libby area offers marvelous winter fun. The Turner Mountain Ski Area, (22 miles from Libby), offers challenging downhill skiing with a tremendous view. Their slogan is "steep, deep and cheap", and the ski area definitely lives up to the name. It's still somewhat undiscovered, so you can get away from the crowds and get the most reasonable lift tickets around! If you are into snowmobiling, there miles and miles of backcountry roads available in the Kootenai Nat'l Forest. Cross-country skiers have access to miles of quiet forest trails to enjoy the outdoors, and there is no end to the choice spots available for ice fishermen! Those who tend towards the wild side will love the antics of the Libby Polar Bear Club. Members regularly take winter-time "swims" in the icy cold water of Libby Creek every Sunday from October to April. Plungers have ranged in age from 3 to 61. If there is ice on the creek, the group will still take their plunge, as long as the ice can be broken.
Still wondering what you can do for adventure? Take some time to explore the spectacular Libby Dam or the 90 mile long Lake Koocanusa, only 20 minutes from downtown Libby. Enjoy the wondrous view from the top of the dam itself, or stop by the visitor center which is equipped with picnic tables and modern facilities for a more comfortable experience. If you'd like a more thorough viewing of Lake Koocanusa in all its unspoiled splendor, head north on Highway 37. Along the way, you will see osprey and bald eagle nests high above the water, and big horn sheep grazing on the slopes above the highway. This highway is an excellent 100 mile-long bicycle tour with many scenic turnouts.
In addition to Libby, Lincoln County is also home to Eureka, Fortine, Rexford, Troy and Yaak, Montana. For additional information on Libby & the Lincoln County area, please see the links below.
